Evergreen Market

I went on a recent trip to the Traverse City area. The weather was as wonderful as Michigan gets: clear sky and daytime temperatures in the 70s. I was fortunate enough to discover a new store – Evergreen Market. It is owned by Paul and Alex Pineau. The store is located on US 31 between Traverse City and Elk Rapids. By now the autumn colors are starting to pop out.

It looks like a typical edge of the Michigan roadway store front – but it is filled with local food. There is fresh produce as well as products produced in Michigan such as honey and maple syrup. And, they sell lavender from their own fields. Michigan company Food for Thought packages their fruit preserves and salad dressing.

The owners also create some of the food for sale. Paul bakes the pies; they are low sugar (apple-based). The fruit is frozen during the season for use year-round. Alex makes the hummus, guacamole, and stuffed grape leaves. He also makes what is becoming their signature product – kale chips. They come in three flavors. I purchased the garlic flavored dehydrated kale. Soup will also be served during the colder months.
